New Transcatheter Device Supplants Open Heart Surgery For Some
A new transcatheter procedure has been performed for the first time in Baltimore at St. Joseph Medical Centers Heart Institute recently, to repair very large openings in the atrial wall of the heart (called an atrial septal defect - ASD). Previously, an open heart operation was necessary for this condition. The Amplatzer septal occluder system was recently FDA approved, and though designed to repair birth defects in children, is available for adults as well. Atrial septal defects may go undetected or, if large, can lead to symptoms of shortness of breath and fatigue. Defects of this kind can also lead to stroke. ASDs are often detected by echocardiography. ASDs are the leading cause of stroke in younger and middle aged adults; approximately 1 in 20 adults was born with a hole in the heart.
